Qualitative Study Maps Quantum Computing’s Potential Role in Green Hydrogen

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinShare on RedditShare on Telegram

A qualitative information-systems study identifies potential contributions from quantum computing to national green-hydrogen development, including catalyst discovery, electrolysis efficiency, storage optimization and system-level decision-making. The research does not show that quantum computers already outperform classical systems or produce operational environmental benefits in green-hydrogen systems.

Published in Information Systems Frontiers, the study examines how quantum technology could be incorporated into green information systems supporting a national green-hydrogen agenda. Its scope covers four sectors identified in the research: agricultural practices, industrial operations, transportation and electricity. Rather than testing a quantum-computing prototype, the work explores the organizational and strategic challenges associated with managing a potentially disruptive technology within a sustainability mission.

The researchers combined interviews with focus-group discussions to capture varied experiences and perspectives on advancing the national green-hydrogen agenda. They analyzed this material through Organizing Vision Theory and Stakeholder Theory. Together, these theoretical lenses provide a framework for strategic visioning and collaboration, helping the study consider how organizations might approach a disruptive technology when it is connected to a wider sustainability objective. The qualitative evidence was used to identify challenges, opportunities and strategies associated with the transition toward green hydrogen.

Quantum computing emerges in the findings as a possible enabling technology across several parts of the green-hydrogen ecosystem. The study associates it with improving catalyst discovery, enhancing electrolysis efficiency and optimizing storage. It also considers how quantum computing might support system-level decisions involving the four sectors in the national agenda. These findings describe areas of potential contribution identified through the research; the available evidence does not include performance measurements demonstrating that a quantum system has delivered gains in catalyst development, electrolysis, storage or decision-making.

The research is best understood as a qualitative strategic assessment rather than a demonstration of technical or commercial performance. The source material does not report sample sizes, participant characteristics, detailed interview procedures, quantitative benchmarks or operational outcomes. It therefore cannot establish improved hydrogen yields, lower emissions, faster development cycles, cost savings or superiority over classical computing. Its main contribution is to connect quantum-technology strategy with green information systems and to set out potential roles for quantum computing across a multi-sector green-hydrogen agenda.
